Our Founding Story
In 2012, Excellent Schools Detroit convened community-based organizations from around the city to participate in their annual School Quality Review. That year, ESD added an exciting new part to their school rating system: an unannounced site visit by parents and community members to assess the climate and learning environment of each school. Now ESD needed help recruiting the 400 parents it would take to complete all 180 site visits.
Participating in the School Quality Review energized and activated some community leaders so much that they begin to lead local organizing campaigns with the neighborhood organizations that recruited them. They had a new vision of the power for change that families could build if they worked together.
Over the next two years, Excellent Schools Detroit continued to convene these groups to share their organizing experiences, to work together on collective issues, and and to give feedback on the Scorecard and ESD's other data and research.
Ultimately, this convening proved to be such a powerful lever for improving schools that participating groups decided to make it official, and 482Forward was born!
