Detroit's Graduation Ladder
If 12 students start 9th grade in Detroit...
In 2011, Detroit's 4-year graduation rate was 67%. That means 9 out of our 12 students graduated on time.
In 2009, the college entrance rate for graduating seniors was 68%. That means 3 of the 9 graduating seniors never went on to college.
Unfortunately, although the technology exists to track our kids to their college graduation, most Detroit high schools do not share that information. So we can only estimate how many of our students actually make it all the way through, using numbers from local universities. In 2011, the graduation rate plus the transfer-out rate for Wayne County Community College was 34%. At Wayne State, the 6-year graduation rate for Latino students was 16.7% and for Black students was 7.5%. So, if we take the average, or about 20%, that means about 1 (a little more) of the 6 students who entered college actually graduated.
...only 1 will graduate college 8 to 10 years later.
